The international calendar of matches of UAF 2023 is a natural reaction to external stimuli

22.01.2023, 21:55

At the end of December 2021, the head coach of the Ukrainian youth team, Ruslan Rotan, said the following in an interview with the Internet resource "Team No. 1": "I know that at least 16 European countries have U-20 teams, which in the future will form the backbone of youth teams, already formed. I hope it will appear here too."

In 2016, UAF Ukrainian Football Association, then still FFU (UAF received a new name in May 2019), closed the project of the U-20 national team, which began in 2010. Five years have passed. The FFU 2017 international match calendar - MKM - was left without the U-20 team, so its fate would be decided at the end of 2016. Is everything new a well-forgotten old thing? Is hope the last to die? While waiting for the best, Rotan signed a contract with FC "Alexandria" and now works part-time.

Meanwhile, the next "youth" will start with a clean slate, because the UAF 2023 MCM, approved by the UAF Executive Committee on 04.01.2023, does not provide for activities for the U-21 team, with the exception of official matches within the framework of the UEFA U-21 European Championship qualification 2023/25, and the teams U-20, as it was and is not.

To be very brief, the following should be said about the UAF 2023 international match calendar:

— this is not a development calendar,

— this is not even a calendar for maintaining the same development, which should be at least permanent,

is a reflection on the calendar of matches within UEFA tournaments for various national teams of national football associations of UEFA members. That is, a necessary or even a natural reaction to external stimuli.

Now a little more detail about MKM UAF 2023.

To begin with, here is the information. Starting from March 2020, national youth national teams of Ukraine will not hold/play international friendly matches. Exception, Viktor Bannikov Memorial in August 2021, in which the team born in 2002 participated. At that time, it was her first training camp (NTZ)! In total, four matches for the teams of the following years of birth: 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007 over three years (counting until March 2023).

If we add to this the withdrawal of the U-20 national youth national team, as well as the closure of the Ukrainian U-21 championship starting from the 2021/22 season, then the U-21 national team should feel the greatest potential negative pressure. Therefore, now let's analyze the situation with the next "young lady".

Football players born in 2002, who together with players born in 2003 will be part of the U-21 team that will start in the UEFA Euro U-21 2023/25 qualification, will not participate in official matches under the auspices of UEFA from March 2019, after the completion of the elite round of the UEFA European Championship 17 2018/19. At the same time, the UEFA U-19 European Championship 2020/21, in which this age group was supposed to play, was canceled.

Team born in 2003 held its last official meetings in June last year as part of the elite round of the UEFA U-19 European Championship 2021/22. But for the period between November 2019, when this age group participated in the UEFA U-17 European Championship 2019/20 qualifiers, and autumn 2021, on the eve of the start of the U-19 competition, footballers born in 2003. remained without international game practice.

As a result, the next "youth" will consist of footballers who have not had regular international practice for almost the last four years! At the same time, the MKM UAF 2023 does not foresee any events for this team other than official ones. The team will start with a clean slate and it is not known under whose leadership. By the way, Rotan spoke about this problem back in December 2021.

Football players born in 2004 and 2005 will participate in the UEFA U-21 European Championship 2025/27. Team born in 2004 played its first official international matches in November 2002 as part of the qualification for the UEFA U-19 European Championship 2022/23. At the same time, due to the cancellation of the UEFA U-17 European Championship 2020/21, this age group missed the stage of formation, preparation and development teams at the junior boys' level. But at the same time, due to the position of UAF, the team did not play a single international match! It has only domestic NTZ in its assets in September 2022.

MKM UAF 2023 envisages holding international friendlies for the team born in 2005, but so far these are only plans that may remain unrealized. Thus, both years - 2004 and 2005 - have a frankly limited amount of international practice, which means a very likely absence of such an important element as a comprehensive selection and selection of footballers using the same international game practice. In other words, we will understand how competitive our football players are compared to their peers only physically during official matches.

At the same time, it should be recognized that the UAF's practice of minimizing, or more precisely, canceling international friendly matches starting from the spring of 2020, has not yet led to noticeable negative consequences. For example, Ukraine qualified for the final part of the UEFA European Championship 2021/23. There are no formal reasons for excitement, because the preparation of the future participant of the European Championship began with the Valery Lobanovskyi Memorial in May 2021. Yes, an exception was made for the "youngster" and she held as many as three international friendly meetings. At the same time, the team started qualifying in September of the same year. Thus, everything was done correctly.

Now a little analysis for the younger boys - about the U-16 and U-17 teams.

Based on the MKM UAF 2023 team born in 2006. still remains without international practice. Matches on the eve of the start in the elite round are not scheduled. This age group met for the first time only last fall and has only official matches within the framework of UEFA's first qualification. But at the same time, it is enough for the team not to be the worst second in the results of the elite round of the UEFA U-17 European Championship, i.e. to become second in its selection group by fulfilling the above condition, and it qualifies for the final part of the tournament. Success? Definitely. And it was achieved without the help of notorious international practice.

The situation since 2007 a little better. In the spring, the team will take part in UEFA development tournaments, which return to the UEFA calendar after the end of the pandemic. But this is the team's first event in its history. In the future, again, only the prospects of friendly matches in September. Taking into account the fact that the DUFLOU tournament is frozen, the preparation of this team is not only minimized, as in the case since 2006, but also complicated because it has been a year since they have not played official matches at the national level, precisely those who are candidates for the national team of this age category.

The pair of 2006 and 2007 are the youth national team of Ukraine in the 2027/29 selection cycle. There are still more than four years to go. But if you remember that until 2017, when the FFU and then the UAF began to cancel and reduce the preparatory work of the youth national teams, the junior national teams started preparing for the start in the qualification for the UEFA European Championship at least one and a half years before the start of the first qualifying round and held during the calendar year, no less than 5-6 national football teams hosted international matches and tournaments, today we are witnessing, if not degradation, then, at least, the disappearance of such a concept as the institution of national national teams in the quality and systematically working structure of the national football association.

Finally, a few words about prospects.

In the medium term, the consequences may not be so noticeable. But in the long term, we will definitely start to experience difficulties and simply lose, at a minimum, the readiness of our football players to compete at the highest level. In short, League B in the UEFA Nations League could turn into our permanent high. After all, the country's first national team starts its formation from the bottom, with the U-16 team, and even better with the U-15 team. But we are still going our own way, while our opponents are preparing, playing and playing again the same international friendlies.
