Ukraine's national team failed to advance from the group stage at the 2024 European Championships, finishing in last place. Serhiy Rebrov's team started the tournament with a shameful defeat against Romania (0:3), then won a narrow victory over Slovakia (2:1) and drew against Belgium. Former national team defender Oleksandr Kucher explained why the country's main team fails in major tournaments.
"Was I disappointed with the performance of the Ukrainian national team at the Euro? There is a residue, of course, we believed in them. I said even before the European Championship that the press should put pressure on the players, give information that the Romanians know how to play football, so that they know and understand that it will not be a passing game. Everyone wrote before the game that our Romanians would be easily defeated. There were many such cases.
At Euro 2016, everyone was shouting that we would leave the group, but we lost to the Germans, played well, and then said that we would win against the Irish, leave the group, and then we got caught there, then there. The press should write that they can play. Our players play in foreign clubs, and we think we have already won. But I say that everything is decided on the football field," Kucher said.
