The tragedy occurred in Indonesia, during the Arema - Persebaia (2:3) national championship match, which was a local derby. As a result of the riots that broke out in the stadium after the end of the game, 130 people died.
A few seconds after the participants of the match left for the locker room, active fans of both teams broke into the football field, and the police intervened in the situation. This led to a massive brawl between law enforcement officers and fans. Soon, not only batons, but also tear gas grenades were used. This development of the situation led to mass panic and a stampede in which fallen people died under the feet of the crowd.
Due to this tragedy, the remaining matches of the tour of the Indonesian championship have been postponed. At the same time, a decision has already been made to ban Arema from playing matches at its home stadium.
