Former German national team player Philipp Lahm criticized the choice of Qatar as the host country of the 2022 World Cup.

"The Arab region has its own football culture, which could be strengthened with the help of the World Cup. Morocco has applied to host five times. But FIFA bypassed the country and awarded the tournament to Qatar, where football is seen as a political tool. Money rules the world. Those who run FIFA and UEFA too often put personal gain ahead of the common good," Lama was quoted as saying by the Guardian.
