Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Taras Stepanenko commented on the idea of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to return Russians and Belarusians to international sports.
“Every time I read the news, I feel furious. For what this country and its president have done to Ukraine, and what they are doing all over Europe. I'm afraid this will stay with me for the rest of my life.
I see it in my grandfather and my grandmother. They are children of the Second World War, and to this day, 80 years later, they carry the tragic memories and traumas of that period. I will never forget what this country has done to me, my family and countrymen.
People from the IOC don't know what war is. They probably watch the news, read the messages, but they don't really realize what Russia and Belarus have done to Ukraine. They need to come to Bakhmut, Kharkiv, Kyiv, Irpen, Bucha, Donbass. They must come and see how many people have been killed, how many houses have been destroyed. If they saw this, they would change their mind in one second. And they must change it, I see no other possibility," Stepanenko said in an interview with Meczyki.
