The former head coach of Kiev’s “Dynamo,” Mircea Lucescu, who now leads the Romanian national team, threatened to leave his current position. This reaction from the 79-year-old specialist was a result of publications in the Romanian press following the “tricolors’” defeat to Bosnia and Herzegovina (0:1) in the opening match of the World Cup 2026 qualifying cycle.

“After the match with Bosnia and Herzegovina, I explained what happened and what needed to be done to avoid such a result. But I did not like how the press interpreted the situation and how my words were taken out of context.
I try to explain. And when I criticize or advise, I do it as a good professional, not with malice but with friendship, love, and understanding. I am already at an age where I should not be angry with anyone. I can only draw attention to myself. Some comments were unpleasant to me.
I am here to help. But I can leave at any moment, without problems, if everything continues in the same spirit,” Lucescu said after the match with San Marino (5:1) in the second round of the World Cup 2026 qualifying cycle.
Let us remind you that Lucescu took over the Romanian national team in August of last year. Since then, under his guidance, the national team has played 8 matches, of which 7 were won, and the defeat to Bosnia and Herzegovina is currently the only negative result.
