Today in Nyon, a meeting of the UEFA Executive Committee is being held, at which a possible reform of the European selection scheme for the world championships is being discussed.
From 2026, 48 teams will take part in the world championships, 16 of them are European. Accordingly, UEFA can form 12 groups of four or five teams in the selection. The winners of such groups will receive direct tickets to the final tournament of the World Cup, the rest of the passes will be played in the playoffs. There are other options for the selection scheme, all of which are aimed at reducing the number of matches.
At the same time, UEFA refused to expand the number of participants in the final tournament of the European Championship to 32 teams.
